Curriculum
The
Future Leaders Institute semester program for 15-24 year olds
is built upon the effective components of many other successful
service learning and experiential leadership programs created
and implemented by members of the FLI team.
FLI
takes learning to a level beyond what our school system provides.
FLI programs utilize a 'passion-to-action' curriculum through
building a diverse team environment where participants feel comfortable
and supported by their peers and program guides. Through FLI,
young people are provided the tools and inspiration to take charge
of their dreams and create worthwhile projects that benefit the
community. Participants are given the opportunity to see how their
actions and choices really matter. This newfound understanding
of their importance transfers into their interest in applying
themselves both inside and outside of the classroom.

The
FLI semester program immerses 12 participants in a supportive
and diverse peer community lead by two experienced Guides on weekly
team meetings and two seasonal outings, specifically tailored
to create visible results in the young person's development as
well as concrete outcomes in his/her community.
Throughout
the course of the program each FLI Team Member will:
1.
Articulate a personal dream or passion (anything legal).
2. Identify at least 10 community leaders who have accomplished
this dream.
3. Interview at least three of these community leaders to learn
key factors of success and ways the field or industry could be
pursued in a manner that would benefit the community.
4. Identify three possible projects that would create tangible
social and/or environmental solutions for the community through
the stated passion.
5. Research the feasibility and social/environmental return on
investment of the possible community impact projects.
6. Select one project and recruit peers and community leaders
for support.
7. Launch their project and .... Wow!
8. Final FLI Team community presentation and celebration.
At
the weekly meetings, each participant presents his/her accomplishments,
performance challenges, as well as two questions for the team
in order to receive feedback and support. Between FLI Team Meetings,
participants work towards initiating their individually-chosen
real-world projects, and receive regular coaching from their FLI
Guides, who provide supportive feedback to enhance their team
members' success.
