True FLI Stories

16-year-old Emily (right) realized her dream of being a professional photographer.
She chronicled the lives of homeless people in her Oakland neighborhood through artistic photographs coupled with brief narratives about their lives. Through four public exhibitions, Emily sold much of her work and donated the proceeds to support the health and hygiene needs of the homeless she interviewed. Emily, like all FLI Team Members, implemented a self-created community impact project that yields a huge social benefit. Each member gets a $150 budget, structured program support and weekly peer and staff guidance and feedback.

Ben, age 16, dreamed of being a rock star and now he is. His band wrote enough songs for a CD, then sold hundreds of them. They then performed live numerous times, raising awareness and thousands of dollars for Amnesty International.
Ben’s band has not only raised money and achieved success, but they serve as powerful humanitarian role models for their peers, adults and the music industry. Ben’s success is remarkable, but is just one example of the many sustainable and growing outcomes from the Pioneer FLI Team’s experience.

Anna, age 17, dreamt of becoming a high school English teacher, and now she’s training them. Through FLI, Anna organized a conference of high school English teachers to talk about how to involve more service-learning in their curricula.
Anna’s knowledge and skill has been recognized by her school. She is now their designated service-learning trainer, training many of her own teachers. Anna continues to develop teacher networks, allowing them to support each other in their goal of using more service-learning and more powerful teaching methods in their classrooms.

Imagine what the world would be like if every young person had the opportunity to pursue their unique dreams in a manner that created innovative solutions to our community’s everyday problems.

Imagine the powerful, positive leaders that would emerge now and for generations to come!
