FLI Fact Sheet

Programs:

During the school year, each FLI high school participant:

  • Identifies a personal dream or passion
  • Meets, interviews and selects a professional Mentor from the community
  • Develops and initiates a project that Maximizes school and/or community benefits
  • Gives and receives regular team feedback and support
  • Is awarded a $200 grant to initiate the project
  • Receives one-to-one professional coaching with trained teacher
  • Develops a plan for long-term project impact or “legacy”
  • Publicly presents project impact and personal growth




2005 - 2006 Accomplishments:

  • 31 students served (that’s 31 new bold humanitarian leaders!)
  • 75 additional students from 10 schools enrolled in 2006-07
  • Partnerships with Albany High, Oakland High and Alameda Community Learning Center (a charter school)
  • 15 teachers trained and participating as FLI Guides
  • Media attention: KRON Channel 4, The Oakland Tribune, KPFA public radio, Contra Costa Times, The East Bay
    Daily News, Argus Tri-Valley Herald, Alameda Times Star, The Daily Review and the San Mateo County Times
  • FLI offered for credit at all partner schools
  • Over 40 professionals volunteering as mentors
  • Significant benefits for youth, schools and communities
5-Year Goals:
  • Formal partnerships with 10 Bay Area schools
  • Build 2,300 bold humanitarian leaders
  • Explore program growth to one other area of the USA
  • Assessments demonstrating long-term benefits for schools, students, families and communities
